The breeders of Mastiffs are people who make a lion's share of a dog's success. It is recommended to buy a puppy from a reputable breeder who can give you proof of his puppies' high quality. First, try to check health certificates of your future Mastiff. There are a number of tests recommended for these dogs. They should be taken annually including the time of breeding. Parent dogs should be tested for hip and elbow dysplasia. They should also have CERF certificates. The Canine Eye Registration Foundation will timely determine if the Mastiffs used in breeding have eye problems.
Mastiffs are not readily available in most countries. Some areas such as Australia or France have a particular shortage of good breeding lines. This fact can be easily explained if one takes a closer look at the history of Mastiffs. Some dogs have been introduced there recently. Thus, breeders have not yet had enough time to develop good breeding lines. Since the number of Mastiffs is not great there, it makes the price of a Mastiff puppy incredibly high.
What makes matters worse is a small litter size. Mastiffs often experience delivery problems. Their large heads and broad shoulder blades do not allow a dam to give birth to puppies without any assistance. Cesarean sections are often needed when breeding Mastiffs.
Whelping is not the only concern of a reputable Mastiff breeder. Mastiff puppies are born rather small. One cannot even imagine that someday this little thing will grow into a great-sized dog. Mastiff puppies should be socialized properly. It is the necessary basis for any dog's sound development.
Your duty as a future Mastiff owner is finding out everything about the process of breeding, pedigrees, health certificates, and surely, how the first weeks of the puppy's life went on. It is also advised to ask for references from other breeders and owners of Mastiffs.

Dogue de Bordeaux were known as hunting dogs in France since the 12th century. They hunted large game: bears, wolves, boars, pigs, and deer. Natural born killers, they were used in wars, and helped to guard and drive cattle. It's the main breed to participate in dog fighting that was extremely popular in the 20th century.
