Mastiffs - Breeders - How Important Is Training?

The breeders and owners of Mastiffs have surely faced a problem when their dogs start showing resistance in the most unsuitable moment. It may be that a Mastiff does not want to sit quietly near its owner but rushes after a cat or some other pet that comes in sight. Mastiffs are also known for their distrust towards strangers. Their natural protectiveness, which is so valued by many people and is considered to be a great plus, turns into a minus sometimes. A Mastiff may not be willing to accept your friends and neighbors readily, which makes them feel a little uncomfortable in the presence of the dog. And this is at best. Some incidents that have been initiated by Mastiffs make one aware that these quiet and generally loyal dogs are not always silent harmless pets.

Yet, saying that undesirable incidents have been solely Mastiffs' fault seems to be very wrong. In fact, a Mastiff's personality and ways of behavior are preconditioned by a great deal of factors, inheritance features and training being among the most vital. Hence, if a dog misbehaves or displays signs of aggressiveness the root of the problem should be sought immediately. Reputable Mastiff breeders always test parent dogs for temperament and avoid breeding those that seem to be incompatible. It helps to eliminate the risk of unbalanced progeny and therefore, the danger to the society.

Training Mastiffs is also an inseparable part of any fruitful upbringing. The absence of training makes a Mastiff potentially threatening not only to strangers but also to the owner. If you have ever seen an owner who can hardly cope with his dog because it simply does not take him for a person capable of commanding, you can imagine what a pitiful sight it is. A Mastiff owner should be in the full control of his dog since these giants can be twice as destructive when not properly trained.

Mastiffs - Breeders - When Should Training Begin?

It is advised to start training Mastiffs from the first days of their presence in your home. It does not imply though long-lasting exhausting sessions. Puppies are trained best during play. Keep in mind that Mastiffs learn things not only in the process of training but also from their daily experience. Certain behaviors that are not welcomed in the future should not be practiced when a Mastiff is a puppy. Misbehaviors should be followed by immediate penalty. A deferred punishment will have no effect other than misunderstanding on the part of your Mastiff.

Mastiffs - Breeders - Are They Hard to Train?

Mastiffs are said to be slightly hard to train. They are intelligent dogs and are willing to please their owners. Still, like other giant breeds of dog, Mastiffs act rather slowly. It may even seem that they are not keen on obeying commands every time they are required to do so. Nevertheless, harsh methods are not recommended when dealing with Mastiffs. In spite of their vicious appearance, they are rather sensitive inside and excessive pressure is likely to make them aloof. It is wise to use positive reinforcement and various incentives when training Mastiffs.
